History
Ramstein Air Base, located in southwestern Germany, was established in the early 1950s as part of a post–World War II NATO initiative. It was officially opened in 1953 and has since become the headquarters for the United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) and NATO Allied Air Command. Built with the cooperation of the U.S. and French forces, Ramstein played a critical role during the Cold War as a strategic hub for air operations. Today, it remains one of the largest American military installations outside the United States and serves as a vital center for transatlantic air mobility, operations, and logistics.
